Long Barn was born ten years ago, when the three founding partners and friends Richard Norris (IT lecturer) , Eric Armitage, (retired civil servant) and Andy Rigg (farmer) began cultivating lavender as amateur enthusiasts. We planted a few hundred cuttings from carefully selected varieties in a corner of field under plastic lemonade bottles with the bottoms
cut off.
Our first harvest was tiny, but In 1998 we even
cobbled together our own Heath Robinson distillation kit (from
domestic hot water cylinders) so that we could experiment with
the extraction of essential oil from cut flowers. To our surprise
it worked and we distilled enough oil to fill a third of a small
coffee jar. Both our sense of achievement and the quality of the oil was exceptional!
Today the business has grown from "three blokes in a lavender field" to a rapidly expanding brand of skin care and toilteries, a retail store and therapy room, a mail order bsuiness and a range of premium hotel toiletries and boutique lines.
The Long Barn range is inspired by the English lavender we continue to farm today and by our commitment to using the purest, natural ingredients we can find throughout all our products.
Long Barn is about working as locally as we can in sourcing and developing our products, our business, our staff and ideas. We are proud of our heritage and the authenticity of the products we produce.
We remain a small family sized venture. We do not aim to comptete with mass produced skin are procuts or toiletries generally available and do not compromise products quality for price.
We feel proud that eveything we produce and source at Long Barn is made to the highest quality specification, with care and respect for the surrounding countryside. The whole farm is LEAF Marque accredited - a verified standard that demonstrates particular care and attention paid to environmental and conservation issues.
